Chapter Eighteen
Synisterâ¦
Even despite her careful but light makeup, she looked tired. Her eyes, now hidden behind a pair of brand name sunglasses, had held dark circles. I did believe a nap was in my kittenâs future.
We brunched at one of the most popular spots in Savannah. Today, we waited. I didnât feel like flexing my power. Some days were meant for flying under the radar and blending into the crowd. There were balances and counterweights to being one of the elites. There was something to be said for being just another man on the street. I happened to enjoy both worlds and lazy Sundays, so today we blended and I kept things lowkey. I think I did it mostly for Madisyn, though. She was sweetly naïve for having been raised rich, or simply didnât go for the power dynamics and sport of it all. She didnât seem to go for the expensive trappings and power plays. The simplicity of it was unique to her, and her natural humbleness when sheâd been raised from anything other than humble beginnings impressed me.
We were seated and silent as we ate. It was a comfortable silence with just a smattering of small talk. Talk of favorite breakfast things and what the week might hold for either of us, mostly her.
My âday job,â as it were, was boring. Certainly, in counterpart to her art and her vibrancy and enthusiastic observation of life. How she loved to capture new things as though they were old, with her oils and brushes on her squares and rectangles of canvas.
Iâd been suitably impressed with her art in the cemetery the day before, and I knew my mother would have loved her instantly.
She certainly moved me with her ways, and I loved that it was simply naturally just her and no wiles at play.
We left the restaurant and strolled in the summertime heat and humidity at a leisurely pace back to my SUV. I opened her door for her and she raised her sunglasses to hold back her hair as she got up into her seat. She had a bit of a faraway look in her eyes as soon as she settled in, before I could close the door. It caught my attention. She looked like she wanted to say something, but couldnât decide if she should or not. I paused and leaned a shoulder against the doorjamb, my curiosity ignited.
I patiently waited her out, but Iâm afraid my patience fled in the face of my curiosity. I finally prompted her with a low, âWhat is it?â
Iâm afraid I wasnât very practiced at soothing. Commanding was more my speed, but sheâd proven to be a delicate flower. I found that with her, I was wanting to downshift my speed and take things a little slower, right up until she did something so unconsciously and naturally sexy, and I essentially turned into a bull in a China shop.
I kept glimpsing her in my mindâs eye, arching beneath me, her arms twining around me, her lithe body sensual and warm against mine, and I wanted more of that.
